La Cuata
Dear Sarah,
Today is your Grandma Angie's birthday.
In 1937, she was born in Roy, a very small town in New Mexico. Unlike most of us, she wasn't born alone. She has an identical twin sister, Tia Vangie. Their names are actually Mary Angeline and Mary Evangeline, but a lot of people call them las cuatas (the twins).
She has lived in Golondrinas with your Grandpa Julian for nearly 40 years. You know that anyone that has lived out in the country (especially with your Grandpa Julian) for that long can't be a softie. No. She's tough. Someday when you get to take a walk with her (probably to the montecito in Golondrinas), you'll have a hard time keeping up with her. She's also a speedster.
She isn't just all about work. She also loves to dance. In fact, she danced you around the hospital room the very first day she met you. When we brought you home and you were fussy, she picked you up, danced you to sleep, and then let you nap in her arms. Grandma Angie is very loving.
On top of all that, she's also a good cook. Yes. Her red chile is delicious, and she makes the best tortillas in the world.
Well, sweet Sarah, I know that I'll never make a tortilla as good your Grandma's, but I'll try my best to be as good of a mom to you as she was to me.
Love,
your mama
Happy Birthday, Grandma!
